Who is a Notary Public, and what does a Notary Public do?

A notary is a specialised lawyer. In England and Wales, notaries are appointed and regulated by the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The titles “Notary” and “Notary Public” are protected, meaning only those who are qualified and registered can use them. The primary role of a notary in England and Wales is to attest to the authenticity of deeds and other legal documents intended for use abroad. Attesting involves more than just simple certification, such as checking copies against originals. When a document is attested by a notary, it means that courts and other authorities abroad can accept it without needing to conduct further checks themselves.
